Token Value 101: What Actually Makes a Cryptocurrency Worth Something

Trading · June 20, 2026

Why is one token worth cents and another worth thousands? Here's a beginner's guide to tokenomics — supply, utility, and what actually drives value.

It's Not Just Supply and Demand

That's true as far as it goes, but it doesn't explain why demand exists in the first place. The real answer sits in a token's "tokenomics" — the design decisions behind its supply, distribution, and actual utility. Two tokens can have identical prices today and completely different futures, because the mechanics underneath them are nothing alike.

Three Things Worth Actually Checking

Before assuming a token's price reflects its worth, it's worth looking at:

  • Supply model — is it capped like Bitcoin's 21 million, or can new tokens keep being created indefinitely, diluting existing holders?
  • Real utility — does holding or using the token actually let you do something (pay fees, vote on decisions, access a service), or is its only function being traded?
  • Distribution — is ownership spread across many holders, or concentrated in a handful of wallets that could move the price by themselves?

The Red Flag Beginners Miss

A compelling story and a rising chart aren't the same thing as value. Plenty of tokens have pumped hard on hype alone before collapsing once it became clear there was no real utility or sustainable demand behind the price. Checking the fundamentals first is what separates an informed bet from a guess dressed up as one.

Understanding what actually makes a token valuable is the difference between chasing green candles and making genuinely informed decisions. Profit From Every Token walks through exactly how to evaluate one before you buy.
